I once thought it was impossible to teach an old dog new tricks, especially when it came to learning a new language. I'm the kind of person that prides themselves in the ability to learn and pick up a language quickly. But as old age hit, it got harder and harder to learn a language. My concentration lacked and my memory was awful. Retaining new information and techniques was almost impossible; that is until, I picked up a copy of Owen's Ultimate Language Secrets. It's unlike any other language learning program out there. There are so many helpful tips and methods that he goes over extensively in this book. He breaks it down step by step without overwhelming you with a whole bunch of rules and regulations. He even tackles one of my biggest language learning hurdles at the moment, forgetfulness. This is an element that tends to accompany old age. Owen is very generous in sharing the knowledge and experience that he has about languages and being able to learn them quickly and easily. When I first learned that my family and I would be moving to Italy, I almost fainted at the very thought of it. This meant a new life, a new culture, and most of all, a new language. As English being my one and only language, having to learn another one was a pretty intimidating idea. It wasn't an option for me not to learn the language of the country that we would be living in. After all, I didn't want to be the foreigner who didn't know how to adapt or couldn't order a pizza without choking over her words. I'm from Alabama, so I have that really deep southern accent that would most likely insult or offend any native whose language I ultimately butcher. When it comes to learning a new language, your pronunciation can make a world of difference. After all, pronunciation is what sets many cultures apart. If you don't think so, just listen to how the word "No" is said in English, Italian and Spanish. It's the same exact word spelled the same exact way, but with a different pronunciation. The distinct way each language pronounces its word is what makes it unique. People often forget how important pronunciation is when speaking a foreign language. Since the alphabet differentiates from culture to culture, then it's only safe to assume, so does how you pronounce each letter. Sometimes, people try to incorporate their alphabet and the way they pronounce the letters into a foreign language. This is also known as an accent. You hear this quite often when someone from another culture speaks your native language. It could sound interesting, endearing or just plain confusing. Now imagine how you sound to them when you're speaking their language with a less than perfect pronunciation. If you've never been exposed to a different culture aside from your own, then learning a foreign language may prove to be a bit more challenging for you. It's almost like trying to speak for the first time. So one of the first things you should do before learning a new language is become familiar with the culture. It's recommended that after you learn a new vocabulary, you should review it almost immediately. This will help that new information make a longer lasting impression on your brain.
